PRINCETON, N.J. (May 26, 2005)—Clinicians, administrators, and policymakers in the substance abuse treatment field have a newly updated directory to help them in seeking treatment facilities for their clients. The publication, National Directory of Drug and Alcohol Abuse Treatment Programs 2005, is based on an annual census of all known facilities in the United States, both private and public, that provide substance abuse treatment. Mathematica Policy Research, Inc., conducted the census, known as the National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services (N-SSATS), for the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

As part of the census, over 16,500 substance abuse treatment facilities across the country were contacted and asked to provide data on the types of treatment programs they offer and the number of people they treat, along with information on facility characteristics. Over 96 percent of the facilities responded. Taken as a whole, about 80 percent reported providing outpatient treatment services, 28 percent provided residential treatment services, and about 7 percent provided hospital inpatient treatment.

The directory is available online and is searchable by geographic location and type of treatment service provided. A locator feature generates a map showing exactly where facilities are located. The directory also identifies facilities that offer services in languages other than English and services for the hearing impaired. Information in the online version is updated monthly. The directory is compiled and maintained by Synectics for Management Decisions, Inc. Free printed copies can be obtained from the National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug Information, (800) 729-6686.
