Eugene C. Rich
Senior Fellow
Eugene "Gene" Rich, an expert in comparative effectiveness research policy and science of clinical practice transformation, is a senior fellow in Mathematica's Washington, DC, office and director of Mathematica's Center on Health Care Effectiveness.
Rich, who joined the staff in 2010, has a career-long focus on variation in clinician practice as well as extensive research and practical experience with the organization and financing of medical care. Through a Robert Wood Johnson Health Policy Fellowship grant he worked with the health subcommittee of the House Committee on Ways and Means on 2007 legislation to reform Medicare physician payment and to expand federal initiatives in comparative effectiveness research.
Rich has recently applied his longstanding interest in national health care policy in several other roles. For the National Institutes of Health, he has been a senior adviser for efforts to promote clinical research and translate research findings to community practice. In 2009 he was Scholar in Residence at the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) focused on the health science issues within health care reform. He has served on various national committees and expert panels, including the Agency for Healthcare Quality and Research, Health Resources and Services Administration, and National Institutes of Health. His past academic appointments include faculty at the University of Minnesota School of Medicine and School of Public Health, as well as senior faculty and administrative positions at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine, and Creighton University School of Medicine. He has been a frequent consultant to health care organizations, for example serving from 1999 to 2004 as medical director of the UniNet Healthcare Network, a six-hospital, 1,000 physician organization.
He is the author of over 100 scholarly publications. In 2001 work he co-led earned AcademyHealth’s Article of the Year Award. Recent national leadership roles include president of the Society of General Internal Medicine, representative to the AAMC Council of Academic Societies, board member for the Association of Professors of Medicine, and member of the Education Financing Committee of the Academic Alliance for Internal Medicine.
He earned his medical degree from Washington University in St. Louis.
