Forum Number 1: The Employment and Work Aspirations
of People with Disabilities
Friday, September 12, 2008 • 12:00 to 1:30 p.m.
Mathematica Policy Research
5th Floor Main Conference Room (Room 5323)
600 Maryland Avenue, SW, Suite 550
Washington, DC 20024
Speakers: David Wittenburg, Ph.D. and
Gina Livermore, Ph.D.

Discussant: Henry Claypool, Policy Director,
Independence Care Systems and Disability Policy Consultant

Overview: Data from a variety of sources indicate that rates of employment among people with disabilities continue to lag behind those of people without disabilities. Dr. Wittenburg will summarize employment statistics for people with disabilities, including reasons for the variation in estimates that exist in the literature and government publications. Dr. Livermore will discuss key features of public programs that are at odds with work activity and will profile the employment and employment aspirations of SSI and SSDI beneficiaries, based on a five-year evaluation of the Social Security Administration’s Ticket to Work program. The findings presented will provide the basis for a broader discussion on the direction of disability policy.

The disability forums can be attended in person or via webinar. Lunch will be provided.
