Surveillance Systems for Hepatitis B and C

Surveillance systems are moving beyond traditional case reporting by health care providers to emphasize direct reporting from medical laboratories, where the locus of hepatitis diagnosis resides. Several states are pioneering innovative means to increase the accuracy and timeliness of reporting, and to improve the location, counseling, and tracking of infected people.

Mathematica conducted an evaluation to help ensure that lessons learned from these emerging surveillance systems will guide other states as they initiate or enhance their own systems. The project determined the capacity of current surveillance systems to (1) monitor changes in disease occurrence, (2) provide case management of infected people, and (3) identify the barriers to and resources needed for developing and implementing effective systems. The study was funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Dvision of Viral Hepatitis.
