School Nutrition Dietary Assessment Study-III

Guaranteeing that low-income children have enough to eat and consume the right mix of nutritious foods is a national policy concern. Mathematica collected data for the third School Nutrition Dietary Assessment study (SNDA-III) for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Food and Nutrition Service in 130 school districts across the country.

The study provides a basis for the development of school nutrition policy in the coming years and is central to the evolution of two of America's most important nutrition programs, the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and the School Breakfast Program (SBP). In fiscal year 2006, the NSLP and SBP served, respectively, 30 million and 9.7 million children per day.

The study included the following:

  • Examining the characteristics of meals produced in terms of both foods and nutrients offered and served
  • Collecting data on the types and nutritional content of foods that children consume over the entire day, using 24-hour dietary recall interviews with students (with parents helping younger children)
  • Gathering information on program administration and aspects of the school environment that affect school meal quality and participation, such as school scheduling and the availability of competitive foods-items of minimal nutritional quality sold in school that compete with regular school meals
  • Collecting information on children's background characteristics that affect dietary intake and school meal participation
