Celebrating Black History Month with Reflection and Action

Mathematica Celebrates Black History Month

At Mathematica, we celebrate Black History Month with events that bring colleagues together to learn about and honor the achievements and contributions of Black Americans—contributions that are foundational to our collective American history.

In some ways, this year is no different than past years. Once again, our Black Employee Resource Group (ERG) has offered its leadership and insights in developing informative resources. It has put together an inspiring program of events, including a public conversation on February 19 with Mathematica Board Member LaVerne H. Council about race, gender, and perseverance. Throughout the month, colleagues across the organization will (virtually) convene to discuss documentaries, books, and current events. In coming together, we will not only develop a better understanding of the Black experience in America and be inspired by the accomplishments and contributions of Black Americans, we’ll also increase our awareness of how much we can and always do learn from each other. Mathematica owes tremendous gratitude to our colleagues in the Black ERG, who not only take the time but have the generosity of spirit to organize these events. We’re a better company and better people for it.

But in other ways, of course, Black History Month is very different this year. In 2021, Black History Month unfolds against a backdrop of domestic unrest fueled by systemic racism that is woven throughout the American story. For me, Black History Month this year will center on renewed reflection on the work I can do to combat inequality and help dismantle the barriers erected by anti-Black racism. This reflection will be strengthened by lessons and examples that friends and colleagues have so graciously offered throughout a year of great challenges and pain. I will also be thinking about issues of equity right here at Mathematica. We have done much to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion in our workplace, but there remains much more that we can, will, and must do, with purpose and empathy. As a mission-driven organization where people bring their passion and their talent to work, Mathematica has an important opportunity not only to meet the moment as America reckons with its history, but to help set the pace.

In a 2016 speech, Barack Obama described how Black history “has shaped and challenged and strengthened America.” He said, “It’s about taking an unvarnished look at the past so we can create a better future.” I hope that these words will inspire others as they do me, as we celebrate not only the contributions of distinguished individuals who have helped build our country but the courage and fortitude of countless Black Americans who have and continue to fight oppression for the good of us all.
