Eric Schone

Principal Researcher

Eric Schone specializes in research on health care outcomes and measurement of health care cost effectiveness and quality. Much of his work extracts information about system performance from administrative and survey data and provides it in innovative ways to health care decision makers.

He is particularly interested in statistical methods used to measure quality and to promote improvement. In recent years, Schone has directed the design and analysis of the Health Care Survey of Department of Defense (DoD) Beneficiaries, which provides key risk-adjusted performance metrics to consumers and military health system leadership. He has served as project director for other DoD research projects, including the TRICARE Standard Survey of both beneficiaries and providers about access to care through DoD’s TRICARE Standard and Extra benefits. For the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, Schone has been involved in numerous projects to assess and promote quality and efficiency. This work includes overseeing calculation of mortality and readmission performance measures published on Hospital Compare and developing risk-adjustment methods for Resource Use Reports to physicians.

Schone holds a doctorate in economics from the University of Virginia.
