Matthew Sweeney specializes in evaluations of hospital quality measures and initiatives, including surgeon workload and productivity, inpatient discharge databases, and supply of primary care providers.
Sweeney is directing a project to provide reports, analytic support, and data management for the Healthcare Quality Information Systems, a portal that offers health care quality improvement news, resources, and data reporting tools and applications for health care providers and others, on behalf of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). He provides expert analytic assistance for a CMS quality reporting program that encourages health care providers to report information on the quality of care to Medicare. He is also working with the Yale Center for Outcomes Research and Evaluation in developing, reevaluating, and implementing hospital outcome and efficiency measures for CMS. In addition, he is leading an analysis of the volume of medical and surgical procedures at military health facilities, as well as associated patient outcomes, costs, and resource utilization.
Before joining Mathematica in 2011, Sweeney held positions at Cornell University and Aetna Student Health. He is a member of the American Economic Association, the American Society of Health Economists, the International Health Economics Association, and the Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management. He holds a Ph.D. in policy analysis and management from Cornell University.
