This study uses data from the Medicaid Analytic eXtract Provider Characteristics (MAXPC), which links provider characteristics to MAX claims data, to examine physician service use and participation in Medicaid. More than half (59.0 percent) of enrollees across 24 states were served by a physician at least once in 2009—ranging from 76.5 percent of enrollees in Kentucky to 21.4 percent in Delaware. Percentages could be under-reported for selected states to the extent that those states failed to report encounter data for people enrolled in prepaid managed care plans.
