Adult education programs aim to help adults acquire the basic skills necessary to be productive workers, family members, and citizens.

To help adults succeed, it is important to understand effective approaches for adult education programs and adult learners. The U.S. Department of Education is undertaking a study to examine the effectiveness of priority adult education programs and services. This study is part of the congressionally mandated National Assessment of Adult Education.

The first phase of this project is a design study that will review the research on effective strategies in adult education; identify and prioritize practices, approaches, or strategies for evaluation; and design evaluations to provide evidence on the effects of these interventions. The U.S. Department of Education might conduct one or more of these evaluations in future phases of the study. Mathematica is partnering with Manhattan Strategy Group and Social Policy Research Associates to perform this study.
