Key Findings

  • The 15 veterans who reported getting a job though HVRP noted that staff connections helped them quickly find jobs, but 13 of them also noted that the jobs did not match their interests or experience.
  • Interviewed veterans expressed trust and respect in their working relationships with their case managers.
  • In addition to temporary housing assistance administered by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, HVRP participants received a variety of other VA services, such as permanent housing, employment services, and health care.
  • Interviewed veterans identified opportunities to tailor services and job placement recommendations and help veterans develop skills to prepare for the workforce.

Capturing the voices of veterans experiencing homelessness can provide a unique perspective on the strengths and potential areas for improvement in the programs that seek to help them achieve stable housing and civilian employment. Fifty-four current and former HVRP participants were interviewed as part of the evaluation. This brief describes the experiences of these veterans in HVRP, the services they most appreciated, and gaps they perceived in the services.
