Key Findings

  • Less than 0.1% of beneficiaries with behavioral health conditions who had a primary care provider received integrated care through the new billing codes in 2017 and 2018.
  • The use of the codes increased from 2017 to 2018 but remained uncommon.
  • Claims submitted with these codes were highly concentrated in certain states and primary care practices.

In January 2017, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services introduced fee-for-service Medicare Part B billing codes for Psychiatric Collaborative Care Management (CoCM) and General Behavioral Health Integration (BHI). As part of the evaluation of the Comprehenisve Primary Care Plus initiative, this study used Medicare data from 2017 and 2018 to examine the extent to which beneficiaries with behavioral health conditions received integrated care through these new codes.
