Preparing Principals to Serve as Instructional Leaders
Amid renewed interest in the role of principals in supporting effective instruction, there is a growing need for practical guidance on how to prepare principals to serve as instructional leaders.
Our webinar on Tuesday, April 10, 1 to 2 p.m. EDT, went through lessons learned from two national organizations that focus on developing principals’ instructional leadership skills:
- The National Institute for Excellence in Teaching (NIET) discussed how it builds the capacity of principals to provide effective feedback to teachers based on observations of their teaching. NIET’s approach is used in its residency-based training program for aspiring principals.
- The National Institute for School Leadership (NISL) discussed how it trains principals to provide teachers with meaningful feedback by developing principals’ understanding of adult-learning principles and key instructional strategies for different subject areas. NISL also shared how it uses practice coaching sessions to build principals’ instructional skills.
This event was part of a project to share lessons learned from the U.S. Department of Education's Supporting Effective Educator Development grants. Mathematica Policy Research is leading the project for the Office of Innovation and Improvement in partnership with AEM and Knowledge Design Partners.
