Carey Appold wins Charles Metcalf award

Carey Appold, vice president of Mathematica’s federal Medicaid practice, was selected to receive the company’s first annual Charles Metcalf Leadership Award. Named for former Mathematica CEO and current member of the company’s Board of Directors, Charles E. Metcalf, the award celebrates leadership that inspires others to continuously learn, collaborate, reach higher, and make progress together in advancing Mathematica’s mission of improving public well-being.

“Carey represents what is best about our organization,” says Mathematica President and CEO Paul Decker. “She is a generous colleague, a gifted leader, and a tremendous example of our mission in action.”

Appold was nominated for the Charles Metcalf Leadership Award by five of her Mathematica peers for her entrepreneurial spirit and willingness to take calculated risks to help the organization make progress on its strategic objectives while also demonstrating the organization’s values and culture. Speaking to her impact inside and outside of Mathematica, nominators commented that, “Carey’s passion for the Medicaid program and the people it serves is the driving force behind the community of staff who are fiercely dedicated to our Medicaid work. The culture Carey fosters has created an intellectual home for numerous staff seeking to contribute to a shared mission.”

In recognition of her contributions to Mathematica, her colleagues, and the field, Appold will receive a Charles Metcalf Leadership Award commemorative trophy and a $5,000 prize.
