Evaluating Coalition Work

Associated Project
Statewide Coordinating Center for California Healthy Eating and Active Living Coalitions
Prepared for:
California Department of Public Health, Nutrition and Physical Activity Branch
This resource helps coalitions evaluate whether their activities are advancing their goals. It describes three steps a coalition should take as part of an evaluation:
- Develop a theory of change that explains how the coalition’s activities will lead to the outcomes it hopes to achieve.
- Create evaluation questions to assess whether each step in the theory of change is occurring as intended.
- Identify what information is needed to answer each question and how the coalition will collect that information.
The resource provides guidance on completing each step and offers examples from a fictional ParkRx program that seeks to give clinic patients free park passes to increase access to outdoor activities and support their physical and emotional well-being.
