About Laura

Laura Kovach has expertise in epidemiology, product management, project management, and client relationships. Her background in epidemiology includes investigating infectious disease outbreaks to identify those affected and to implement control measures.

Before joining Mathematica in 2021, Kovach held various positions at U.S. News & World Report’s Hospital Data Insights (HDI), serving as product director and senior product manager. She directed the operation of tools for data analytics and the strategic trajectory of the HDI Adults and Pediatrics rankings, enabling more than 1,500 hospital and health system administrators analyze more than 2 million data points. In addition, she led onboarding and consulting activities for more than 350 hospitals and conducted interactive training sessions for senior staff on benchmarking analyses to drive quality improvement and patient safety.

During her time at the Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL), Kovach served as a senior specialist for infectious disease programs. She facilitated information and technology sharing for infectious disease outbreak detection and prevention between the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Food and Drug Administration, APHL members, national associations, and other federal agencies. She also helped the Infectious Disease Committee create standards and guidance to mitigate infectious disease outbreaks. As an epidemiologist for the Kentucky Department for Public Health, Kovach coordinated with regional epidemiologists to resolve and determine the sources of local and national disease outbreaks and conducted molecular surveillance activities to monitor enteric diseases in Kentucky. Kovach holds an M.P.H. in epidemiology from the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine and an M.B.A. from the University of North Carolina’s Kenan-Flagler Business School.
